4 Zoysia Wide-Blade Grasses for Texas
- , Sod
If you are in the market to have a new lawn installed in Texas, you have most likely heard about Zoysia grass. Zoysia is becoming a popular alternative to other warm-season grasses. Zoysia stands out as an excellent choice due to its drought tolerance, adaptability, and number of varieties available. Unlike some other warm-season grasses, Zoysia offers both a thin-blade and a wide-blade variety. Below, we have outlined the major characteristics of four Zoysia wide-blade grasses in Texas.
Crowne Zoysia
Crowne Zoysia grass is a dark green blade approximately 5-7 mm wide. Crowne is a perfect sod variety for low-light Texas lawns. It offers a really soft texture and dense turf, which is perfect for moderate foot traffic and backyard play. Like other Zoysia varieties, Crowne can survive longer periods of time without water and can survive several hours without sun.
Empire Zoysia
With more of a bluish-dark green blade about 5-7 mm wide, Empire Zoysia grass claims to be the most cold-tolerant variety. This means that it will go dormant later in the season and green up earlier in the spring. Add to that its adaptability to soil types and drought tolerance; it’s hard to go wrong.
JaMur Zoysia
Known for its slightly better performance for foot traffic, Jamur Zoysia grass is another great wide-blade Zoysia grass. Jamur can also be described as a blue-green shade; it is a bit lighter than Empire. Jamur also has a favorable track record for weed resistance.
Palisades Zoysia
Palisades Zoysia grass is the most common and tested variety of the wide-blade Zoysia varieties. Developed by Texas A&M University, Palisades is hardy and establishes well in many soil conditions. In appearance, Palisades is lime green and has a 5-7 mm wide blade. Not only does Palisades deliver on drought tolerance, but it is also the most shade-tolerant of all the wide-blade varieties. Due to its low-light requirements, this sod variety makes for an ideal choice for those who want to correct and dry up muddy side yard areas where Bermuda grass fails.
It’s hard to go wrong with any of these wide-blade Zoysia varieties. So, if you live in Texas and are looking for a grass that provides drought tolerance, weed resistance, adaptability to shade, hardiness to cold, and a grass that just feels great to walk barefoot in, definitely take a look at any of these Zoysia sod varieties.
