Bermuda Grass

Most homes in Prosper and the far North Dallas area have a Bermuda grass lawn. It is an extremely durable grass and one of the most heat, drought and disease tolerant turf varieties for our southern climate. It grows best in sunny areas with good drainage and is budget-friendly; though, it does require regular mowing during the growing season. Bermuda grass is classified as a perennial warm-season species that thrives during spring, summer and fall seasons and goes dormant in the winter.

Zoysia Grass

We typically install Zoysia sod grass in shady areas of the lawn where Bermuda grass struggles. Zoysia grass is a heat, drought and disease tolerant turf variety like Bermuda grass. Some advantages that Zoysia has over Bermuda is that it can grow in sunny or shady areas, is more cold tolerant, requires less mowing, stays green longer and is less likely to have weed infestations due to its thick carpet-like characteristics. Though it does cost significantly more to install than Bermuda it is more likely to save in maintenance costs.

St. Augustine Grass

Installing St. Augustine grass is a good choice for those who need a more shade tolerant grass than Bermuda and a more budget-friendly grass than Zoysia. St. Augustine grass is a heat and drought tolerant turf variety with a wide blade and thick carpet-like characteristics that resists weeds well. However, it does require more maintenance and is more susceptible to pest infestations by the southern chinch bug and fungal diseases such as gray leaf spot, large patch and take-all root rot.
