6 Fast-Growing Trees for Privacy: Trees for Privacy from Neighbors
- , Plants
Whether you live in the city or the suburbs, privacy is one of the primary concerns for all homeowners. Designing your landscape with plants for privacy is both cost-effective and visually appealing for both you and your neighbor. Most trees grow an average of 1 foot each year until reaching maturity. This growth might not seem fast enough, so consider planting any of the following 6 fast-growing trees for privacy.
Juniper Taylor
If your landscaping space is limited, the Juniper Taylor tree might be the perfect privacy tree for you. Juniper Taylor grows in a very narrow, columnar form. Once planted, the Juniper Taylor grows an average of 2 feet each year until reaching a mature height of up to 30 feet while remaining no more than around 3 feet wide. Like most all evergreen juniper plants, the Juniper Taylor loves the sun, so make sure to plant it in a sunny place. Due to the unique shape, the Juniper Taylor makes the perfect privacy tree for narrow, side yard areas or blocking out a small, specific spot.
Nelly Stevens Holly
While the Nelly Stevens Holly is technically a large evergreen landscape shrub, it grows in a pyramidal form to a height of 15-20 feet and 10-12 feet in width. Once planted in either the sun or shade, the Nelly Stevens Holly grows between 2-3 feet each year. The dense foliage combined with the growth habit makes the Nelly Stevens a wonderful privacy tree. When deciding where to plant, keep in mind that the Nelly Stevens will grow wide, so make sure to plant at least 5 feet from your fence or property lines. The Nelly Stevens Holly makes a great privacy screen when planted en masse or as a single.
Loquat
In your quest for privacy, if you enjoy a more tropical look, the Loquat tree is an excellent North Texas tropical landscaping tree option. Loquat is an evergreen tree with both bold foliage and edible fruit. The Loquat grows up to 3 feet each year until it achieves its mature size of up to 25 feet tall and wide. The Loquat tree can certainly handle partial sun; it does best in a sunny spot. Due to the width and fruit, make sure to give your Loquat tree room along your property line, at least 10 feet.
Live Oak
As one of the few large evergreen trees, the Live Oak tree is a perfect choice for privacy…assuming you have the space for it. With a mature growth of up to 40 feet in height and 50 feet in width, the Live Oak gains 3-4 feet of that height each year. Plant it in a sunny space, and the Live Oak will give you all the privacy you need.
Leyland Cypress
One of the fastest-growing coniferous, evergreen trees, the Leyland Cypress tree can certainly give you almost instant privacy. Growing in a pyramidal shape, the Leland Cypress does most of its growing while young, achieving an additional 4 feet of height each year. For healthy growth, plant your Leland Cypress at least 10 feet from other plants and property lines, as it requires good air circulation to reach its mature size of up to 35-40 feet in height and 20-25 feet in width.
Wax Myrtle
The fastest-growing evergreen tree on our list is the Wax Myrtle tree. The Wax Myrtle is a shrubby, multi-trunk tree which can gain a staggering 5 feet of growth each year. As a smaller, ornamental tree, the Wax Myrtle matures at about 15 feet in height and width. This growth habit makes it easy to find a place for it in most residential landscapes with small backyards. The only drawback to the Wax Myrtle is that its branches tend to be weak, and with its dense foliage, the branches can break. We recommend planting in a sunny place with a few other plants surrounding it to help support the branches.
