Small Backyard Landscaping Ideas

Landscaping Ideas for Small Backyard

  • February 5, 2020
  • , Landscaping

When considering the various landscaping ideas for a small backyard, the most important thing to consider is how you plan to use the space you have. While front yard landscapes consider curb appeal, backyard landscapes should not only be a space that not only invites you outside but that suits your unique style and needs.

Garden Area for Small Backyard

If yard space is limited, use your plants wisely. Rather than installing large garden beds with room for multiple rows of plants, consider installing landscape garden beds of about 2 ft to run along the entire backyard perimeter. Choose from plants that have a narrow growing habit such as boxwoods, sky pencil holly or even vines supported on trellis panels.

When you are landscaping a small backyard with no grass, consider installing rock in its place and planting drought-tolerant desert plants. If you prefer the idea of having patio space for seating, consider the cost of extending your existing patio. If you love the idea of having grass but simply can’t get it to grow, artificial turf would be a great way to go.

Dogs will spend more time in the backyard than we will, so it’s worth taking a moment to consider what they might enjoy and what they might destroy when planning a new backyard landscaping installation project.

Dogs prefer to relieve themselves on turf, so plan to dedicate an area of your small backyard to this purpose. In addition, dogs love to guard their territory, so pay special attention to the perimeter of your backyard as they tend to run back and forth along the fence line. Either avoid planting altogether along fence lines or choose more robust plantings.

In all cases, make sure you check to make sure your plantings are non-toxic.

Landscaping a small backyard can present challenges. In general, less is more. Be deliberate about your choices and make the most of what you have.
