When Can I Resod My Lawn in Texas?
- , Sod
When making the decision to install new sod grass, it’s important to consider our seasons. You can actually resod your North Texas lawn throughout the year with Bermuda, St. Augustine, and Zoysia warm season grasses. However, there are certainly pros and cons with each grass variety and season. So you may be wondering, when can I resod my lawn in Texas? We have compiled the most frequently asked questions below to help answer this question for you.
Is Spring a Good Time to Resod My Yard?
Yes, spring is a fantastic time to resod your yard. Temperatures are mild enough for it to take root and grow. In addition, we tend to have more rainfall in the spring, which helps with grass rooting. One of the best reasons to plant new sod in the spring is to get it established in time to enjoy your lawn before the summer heat! Bermudagrass usually greens up first and is best to install in early spring, while Zoysia and St. Augustine grasses are a bit later to come out of dormancy, so we would recommend planting in mid to late spring if you want instant gratification of a green lawn.
Is Summer a Good Time to Resod My Yard?
While summer is not the best time to resod your yard, it can be done without a problem with a little extra care. All warm-season grasses are out of dormancy at this time, so it’s easier to judge the sod quality. The spring rush will be over, so you should have no problem finding a landscaper able to do this work for you. Given the price you’ll pay to have new sod laid in your yard, we recommend having it done as early into summer as you can when the temperatures are milder. The main disadvantage to planting sod during the summer in Texas is the extreme heat. Our summer heat will require additional watering during the rooting period. It’s vital to keep tabs on your new lawn during the summer to ensure it does not dry out.
Is Fall a Good Time to Resod My Yard?
Yes, fall is an excellent time to resod your yard. The temperature is mild again, making for an easy rooting period. The only disadvantage is that there won’t be a lot of time for you to enjoy your new lawn before it goes dormant. Warm season grasses will typically go dormant in late November to early December in north Texas, depending on the weather. We recommend that you lay sod at least 3 weeks prior to the first freeze of the season, which can be as early as Thanksgiving. This way, you can ensure that your new grass will be established prior to dormancy.
Is Winter a Good Time to Resod My Yard?
While winter is not the best time to resod your yard, if you keep close tabs on the weather forecast, it is still possible. The average soil temperatures in North Texas stay mild enough to allow for some root establishment during the colder months. One advantage to resodding during the winter is that it will be ready to enjoy at the start of spring. The disadvantages are that unexpected heavy freezing at the sod farm could damage the crop and the fact that it comes to you during dormancy may make it difficult to judge the sod quality. If you must have sod laid during the winter months, we recommend doing it as early in the season as possible.
When is the Best Time to Lay New Sod?
The spring and early fall are the best times to install new sod. Specifically, late March, April, May, September, and early October are best. These months have the mildest temperatures and good rainfall, making it easier to care for your new grass.
When is the Worst Time to Lay New Sod?
The worst time to lay sod would be during freezing temperatures, when there is snow on the ground, or during periods of very heavy rainfall when the ground is soggy.
